If you need revision on maps, you have come to the right place. This is the page where you can revise for the coming exams. On this page you will revise on maps and coordinates. I hope this helps you in the upcoming exam.
Coordinate graphing
When writing coordinates on a map, there are two things you must remember. The first step you must remember are the axes. You have two axes on a grid. The horizontal axis is called the x axis. The vertical you see is called the y axis. The second thing you must remember is that you always write the x coordinate before the y coordinate eg. (x,y). The order you write it in is very important. If you write it the wrong way round it will be a different coordinate. Look at the two different coordinates. They have thhe smae number but different order. To find out what it is, you see how many it goes across and then you see how many it goes up.
You're ready to start. Find the coordinates for the following. Answers a) (6,1) b) (0,0) c) (2,6)

Now that you have got the hang of that we are going to start to work with maps. When you see something map there is usually a scale. A scale tells you the actual distance. It will have a distance on the peice of paper but then will tell you the actual distance. Sometimes it could look like this( 200m). Look at these sample questions, they might help you understand a bit more. Here is a map. A bird flies from St Paul to Baker Playground. What is the approxitmate distance the bird flies?
The approximate distance is 600m. You work this out by looking at the scale. The scale tells you how far on the picture it is in real life. So all you do is see how many of the lines (bottom left corner) you can fit from St Pauls to Baker Playground. You can fit around 6, so 6 of the 100m is 600m. Now that you can do it try the following questions.
Try the next question using the same map above.
If you were a flying animal of some sort and you were at home and going to school, How far would you have to go?
Answer You will have to fly about 500m For the next question, use the map below. Bob and Fred are on a road trip, they are at the yellow dot and want to get to the blue dot. The petrol is so expensive so they want to know the shortest way there. Which way is the shortest way to get there?
Answer The quickest way to get there is to go from yellow, pink, green, blue
Let's try something a little different now. Here is a map of. This map is called a contour map. It shows the different heights of different places. Look at the example below, it might help you understand a liitle better.
As you can see, there are numbers on there. That indicates how high it is. As you can see the orange part is 50m. The yellow is 100m, the skin colour is 150m and the grey is 200m.
Try the next few questions using the picture below.
Bec, Claire and Julie are on a race to reach the top. Which is the correct order from first to last? (Multiple Choice)
Now, when drawing the map it is a little different. You draw the map from the side a if you were standing there. When you draw it is it is like a graph. Look at the example below.
If you look at the lines going horizontally, the numbers there is the height of it. The vertical lines is the area of the place. Try the question below.
